BFMTV reported that the boy was left to live alone in his family’s apartment in the town of Nersac, Charente, for two years from 2020 to 2022, appearing to survive on cakes, canned goods and stolen tomatoes.
The child’s mother and her partner live in another apartment 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) away and only visit the child “occasionally”, BFMTV reported.
According to BFMTV, Nersac Mayor Barbara Couturier said the child often did not have hot water or heating, but he continued to go to school during this time and was a good student.
Couturier said she notified local and national police of the situation after her mother asked social services for help buying food.
“I met his mother in May 2022. She came and told us she had financial problems and we gave her four food stamps, but she took some processed food, which made me suspicious. Some residents told “I was a child who lived alone, so I connected the two things and called the local police and the national police,” Couturier explained.
Couturier said the child has been in the care of social services since September 19, 2022.
