It was 30 years ago this Friday that Nirvana star Kurt Cobain, suffering from pain, addiction and depression, took refuge in a greenhouse above his Seattle home and took his own life. .

It was April 5, 1994, and he was 27 years old.

Family, friends and fans have known that Cobain was in trouble for some time, but that doesn’t lessen the loss for the singer, guitarist and songwriter who became (reluctantly) an icon seemingly overnight.

With the voice and face of the so-called grunge generation, Cobain broke the slick, spandex-wearing curse of Nirvana’s major-label debut in the 1980s. It doesn’t matterwhich reached No. 1 on the Billboard album chart in January 1992.

For a brief moment in pop music history, Cobain’s sandpaper roars, gnarly hooks and punk ethos dominated the mainstream.

Then, suddenly, it was all over.
