rock and roll hall of fame Nominees announced Saturday for the Class of 2024.
Two-thirds of the artists on the list for rock’s top honor are first-time nominees, many of them women.
Other 2024 nominees include Dave Matthews Band, Eric B. & Rakim, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Jane’s Addiction, Kool & the Gang, Lenny Kravitz, Oasis, Ozzy Osbourne and A Tribe Called Quest.
According to the Hall of Fame’s rules, artists must release their first commercial recording at least 25 years before the year of nomination to be considered.
These high-profile nominations for women, including women of color, are notable for an institution that has been criticized for years for focusing on white male artists.
Greg Harris, president and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, told NPR: “This has happened before. Frankly, the nominating committee and the voting body have really changed in recent years. “Elections are more Diverse membership. More female artists are being included, as well as more people of color. “
According to data shared by the Hall of Fame, from 2021 to 2023, Thirty-three percent of inductees are women and 48% are people of color.
“We remain committed to recognizing and honoring the impact of female artists by inducting more of them into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,” the Hall of Fame wrote in a statement. “As our past three inductees have demonstrated, we Work is underway to make changes in this area.”
But at least one artist has yet to be seduced by the promise.
