No. 15 Creighton beats No. 1 UConn by 19 points


UConn’s dominance in college basketball is finally over.

No. 15 Creighton definitely surprised the No. 1 player husky Tuesday night at CHI Health Center in Omaha, Nebraska.Blue Jays dominate 85-66 Unpopular Beat UConn for a huge win in the Big East.

Of course, since this was the program’s first win over an all-time No. 1 team, there were huge celebrations on the field.

The win came after months of dominance by UConn, which quickly distinguished itself from the rest as the best team in the country. The Huskies entered Tuesday night with a 24-2 record, fresh off a 28-win streak. Points had a blowout win over then-No. 4 Marquette University. They also haven’t lost since Dec. 20, when Seton Hall blew them away in conference play by 15 points. When the two schools first met in Storrs, they easily defeated Creighton and were on a 14-game winning streak, the longest in the country.

Tuesday night, however, was a completely different story. Creighton can’t afford to miss the game early.

At the end of the first half, Clayton entered the locker room with a 14-point lead. The Blue Jays went on a 22-6 run in just over eight minutes, holding UConn to just 1-for-7. Steven Ashworth hit 4 three-pointers in 20 minutes and scored 16 points.

Creighton then went on an 8-2 run in the second half that suddenly extended their lead to 20 points. Although UConn rallied briefly in the final seconds, the Huskies used an 18-5 run to cut the lead to 10 before the four-under timeout — too late. Clayton held on in the final minutes to win by 19 points.

Tristan Newton Connecticut scored 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Donovan KlingenThe Huskies, who got into foul trouble early, scored 12 points and 7 rebounds. Creighton currently has a 20-7 record with four games remaining in the regular season. While this win goes a long way, it may be too late for the Blue Jays to overtake UConn and become the top seed in the Big East before the tournament begins.

While Tuesday’s loss was shocking, UConn is still in good position to compete for the No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. The Huskies are four games away from the Big East Championship and can bounce back with another win over Marquette in March. 6. But Creighton’s win reminded the nation that the Huskies cutting the Nets again in April isn’t inevitable.
