The breakthrough at last at Old Trafford! Luton fail to clear a Bruno Fernandes corner, and Victor Lindelof roofs home from the middle of a crowded box. Old Trafford celebrates more with relief than joy.

… but the Gunners don’t feel sorry for themselves. The come straight back at Burnley and almost immediately regain the lead through William Saliba.

Arsenal 1-0 Burnley. Turns out Trossard has hurt his arm rather than his ribs. No change yet; looks like they’ll establish what’s what during the break. But he is holding it gingerly.
GOAL! Inverness Caledonian Thistle 2-0 Ayr (Wotherspoon 43). David Wotherspoon’s second of the match. Big Dunc on target for his third win in five games since taking over at Caley Thistle; he’s drawn the other two.

Leandro Trossard bundles home at the expense of his ribs, as he clatters into the post. “Promising from Kai Havertz so far,” reports Charles Antaki. “He’s moving around nicely, well oiled, frictionless; frictionless also means without having any purchase on anything, but early days yet.”
Manchester United 0-0 Luton Town. United still haven’t made the breakthrough against the Hatters, and now if they’re to fashion a goal, it won’t be Christian Eriksen turning the key. He’s jarred his knee and has been replaced by Mason Mount.
GOAL! Hibernian 1-0 Kilmarnock (Campbell 36). Josh Campbell opens the scoring at Easter Road as Hibs look to bounce back from their League Cup semi-final defeat last weekend, and the shipping of a last-minute equaliser at St Mirren during the week.
GOAL! Inverness Caledonian Thistle 1-0 Ayr (Wotherspoon 32). Big Dunc continues to work wonders on the banks of the Moray Firth.
GOAL! Leeds 2-0 Plymouth (Piroe 28). Joel Piroe notches his sixth of the season and Argyle are in serious bother. By the way, Plymouth fans desirous of a top-drawer page turner are pointed in the direction of The Lion Who Never Roared by Matt Tiller. It’s the story of Plymouth striker Jack Leslie, who was selected to play for England in 1925 only to have the invitation withdrawn when the FA discovered the colour of his skin. A heart-breaking tale wonderfully told.
GOAL! Motherwell 0-1 Hearts (Shankland 27). Lawrence Shankland dinks home from close range, no more than Hearts deserve after a confident start.
Everton 1-1 Crystal Palace. There’s another Eze-Branthwaite tangle in the Everton box, but this time there’s no penalty award. In fact Eze goes into the referee’s notebook for simulation.

GOAL! Leeds United 1-0 Plymouth (James 21). Dan James opens the scoring at Elland Road, and by all accounts it had been coming.
Manchester United 0-0 Luton Town. Chiedozie Ogbene has a dig from distance. It’s Luton’s first serious foray into United territory, but Andre Onana is behind it all the way.
Arsenal 0-0 Burnley. The Gunners had started fairly slowly, only to come to life when Bukayo Saka sends a pearler towards the top corner. James Trafford is equal to it and tips the ball onto the bar and away.
GOAL! Ipswich Town 1-1 Swansea City (Jack Taylor 17). Jack Taylor equalises for Ipswich with a 30-yard thriker. That’s now 35 consecutive games in which Ipswich have scored.
GOAL! Dundee 1-0 St Mirren (Bakayoko 16). Amadou Bakayoko opens the scoring for the Dee against the third-placed Buddies.
Manchester United 0-0 Luton Town. That man Scott McTominay goes close with a header. The hosts have come out of the blocks in determined fashion today.
GOAL! Ipswich 0-1 Swansea (Fulton 7). Jay Fulton’s header means it’s yet another slow start for the second-placed Tractor Boys.
Manchester United 0-0 Luton Town. United have pressed Luton back from the get-go, and they should be leading. Rasmus Højlund has missed an absolute sitter from close range. He’s got five in the Champions League but is still to open his Premier League account.
GOAL! Southampton 1-0 WBA (Smallbone 5). After a shaky start to the season, Southampton are beginning to piece things together under Russell Martin. They’ve taken 17 of the last 21 points on offer, and have started strongly today, Will Smallbone opening the scoring against a West Brom team who are in decent form themselves after three wins on the bounce.

Eh, scrub that. Eberechi Eze goes over Jarrad Branthwaite’s dangled leg, then slots the penalty confidently past a rooted Jordan Pickford. What a start at Selhurst!

Corrections, clarifications and rank idiocy department. Mark Walsh points out my schoolboy error regarding Luton Town and Old Trafford (2.27pm). “It’s worse than that for Luton, Scott. Their sole win away at Man United was before the home team had moved to Old Trafford! A good chance for United to make some more history today perhaps.”
Yes, thanks for the spot. I’m on my own right now but will get someone to give me a clip around the ear later. So to clarify: Luton have lost all 16 of their matches at Old Trafford, a run that stretches back to 1937. Their first three away fixtures against Manchester United were played between 1897 and 1900 at Bank Street, where they boast a comparatively decent record of one win and two 5-0 defeats.

FULL TIME: Sunderland 3-1 Birmingham City. The Black Cats move into the play-off spots thanks to goals from Jobe Bellingham and Adil Aouchiche, and a Dion Sanderson own goal … but that’s not really the top line, is it? The Gary Rowett / Gianfranco Zola dynamic continues to be mined in ersatz fashion by Wayne Rooney. He took over from John Eustace, who had won his last two matches in charge of Blues 4-1 and 3-1; Rooney’s now presided over four losses and a draw. The fixtures haven’t been particularly kind, to be fair, and Rooney is attempting to implement a new style of play … but the upcoming visit of Sheffield Wednesday suddenly looks like a must-win if he’s going to get the more suspicious denizens of St Andrew’s onside.
That result means Spurs pass up the chance to clamber back to the top of the Premier League table … and gives Arsenal the chance to nip ahead of them into second spot with a win against Burnley this afternoon. Wolves move up three places to 12th, and could end the day 11th if Everton do a number on Palace.
FULL TIME: Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur
A sensational finish to the game at Molineux! Brennan Johnson had scored early for Spurs, who hung on grittily in the face of intense second-half pressure from Wolves. Ange Postecoglou’s side looked to have done enough, but Pablo Sarabia and Mario Lamina delivered an injury-time double whammy to claim all three points for Gary O’Neil’s men. Manchester United make two changes from the team that capitulated in Copenhagen. Victor Lindelof comes in for the injured Jonny Evans, with the out-of-sorts Raphael Varane remaining on the bench. Aaron Wan-Bissaka is ill, so Sergio Reguilon takes his place.
Luton Town are unchanged after their impressive draw with Liverpool. A fair chance they’ll be going into this fixture with some trepidation: they’ve lost on 18 of their previous 19 visits to Old Trafford. Their sole victory came on their first, back in 1897. The aggregate score of their last three visits: 13-2 to United. To be fair, their last trip to their Theatre of Nightmares (© Copenhagen fans) was in 1991, so the relevance of all this can be considered moot.

Crystal Palace make one change from the XI sent out to beat Burnley 2-0 last week. Eberechi Eze comes in for Cheick Doucoure. Michael Olise has recovered from injury and is named as a substitute for the first time this season.
Everton make one change from the 1-1 draw with Brighton. Sean Dyche swaps in Amadou Onana for Idrissa Gueye. They’re looking for a first win at Selhurst Park since 2020, after which they’ve suffered 3-1 and 4-0 defeats, and ground out a goalless draw back in April.
Arsenal make one change from the team sent out to beat Sevilla 2-0 during the week. Oleksandr Zinchenko replaces Ben White in defence. Bukayo Saka, an injury doubt after limping off against the Spaniards, is fit to start.
Burnley name the same first XI that went down 2-0 at Turf Moor to Crystal Palace last weekend. They’re hoping to snap a five-game losing run in all competitions, and while on the face of it this doesn’t look a promising fixture for Vincent Kompany’s struggling side, Burnley’s two most recent visits to the Emirates should give them succour: they drew 0-0 here in 2022, and won 1-0 in 2020.
