Latest Apple Watch integration makes customized exercise less of a headache

The most controversial thing about the holiday season isn’t training. The major competitions of the year are over! However, Apple and TrainingPeaks are getting a head start on next year’s plans with a new integration that lets you import custom workouts directly into your watch.

If you’re not familiar with TrainingPeaks, it’s an app that helps endurance athletes find training Planning their next half marathon, triathlon – you name it. If you’d like, it also offers coaching services, pairing you with a certified coach to customize your plan based on your personal schedule, performance and needs. The idea is to take away some of the guesswork you should do when preparing for your event.

The integration itself is simple and is based on a new watchOS 10 API and it’s functionally similar to how Garmin Coach workouts appear directly on your Garmin watch after you sign up for the program and sync your watch. All you have to do is enable the feature in the settings of the TrainingPeaks app and allow some Apple Health permissions – all of which are easy to do.

I tried it out myself ahead of its official release, and it will definitely appeal to those who typically buy rugged multisport watches (the Garmin crowd, if you will.)

The TrainingPeaks running workouts I’ve tried are pretty standard for intermediate to advanced athletes. I set up a premium account so I can also see some coaching feedback in the app. But what I love most is how it removes yet another obstacle to rolling out of bed, lacing up your sneakers, and actually hitting the pavement.Analysis paralysis is real and doesn’t have to be think Knowing what exercises you are going to do can be very helpful in staying on track. Especially when you’re tired of browsing multiple apps or websites to manage a single training plan.

For example, during my last half marathon, I used the Runkeeper training plan but logged each workout manually on my Apple Watch and In the mobile app. Is this very inefficient? Of course, especially since Runkeeper has an Apple Watch app. My problem is that I don’t like the interface of the Runkeeper Apple Watch app and prefer the workout view of the native Workout app. But to get my preferred interface, that meant I had to write my own custom running programs for intervals or tempo runs on my Apple Watch. real Old really fast.

With TrainingPeaks integration, this is no longer the case. When you open the workout app, you can see your workouts for the day. The TrainingPeaks logo is clearly visible, and if you click on the three-dot menu you can see more details about a workout or view upcoming workouts. When you complete a specific workout, that data is sent directly back to the TrainingPeaks app itself, where you can view the results there or in Apple’s Fitness app.

It seems like a small thing, but it’s streamlined all Spreading fitness data and plans across multiple apps, devices, and platforms can be a pain. I’m a wearables reviewer and my own system is far from efficient. So it’s nice to see the Apple Watch come with this feature — and it’s a big undertaking if Apple wants the Ultra to succeed in a space dominated by Garmin. Many endurance athletes don’t use a single app or platform, and most other multi-sport watches have features and integrations that better accommodate personalized training.

However, we’ll have to see how many other third-party applications utilize this API. One of them is that I don’t like the TrainingPeaks API, and while I love programming, I prefer to stick with the apps I’m currently using.It would be great if there were Those ones Apps like TrainingPeaks do utilize the API in the same way. But even if there are a lot of apps doing this, the Apple Watch still has a long way to go, and I think it will attract the attention of Garmin die-hards. If it really wants to win those over, battery life and resumption of tracking issues must be addressed next.
