Images of children trapped under rubble predate Gaza war and show signs of artificial intelligence

The image was shared alongside a similar statement on Facebook here and here.

User comments indicate they believe this to be true.

One wrote: “I feel like every Palestinian child who bleeds is my child. This hits me in the heart. But there is nothing I can do.”

Another commented: “My heart is broken when I see this photo. I want to rush over and hug the children in my lap. May God have mercy on them.”

However, AFP discovered the image online months before Hamas’s October 7 attack and Israel’s subsequent bombing of Gaza.

Images predate the war

A visual communications expert told AFP that the image was “most likely” produced using an artificial intelligence tool.

This image has also been flagged as generated by artificial intelligence by the European Verification Project vilaai.comin which AFP is a partner.

User X, who shared the image in February, has not yet responded to AFP’s inquiries about its origin.
