California grandfather shot to death in front of granddaughter after answering door

A grandfather was brutally murdered in front of his young granddaughter as he answered the door at his California home last fall, prompting officials to offer a reward for the man’s killer.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, 57-year-old Hector Ascencio, Sr. was shot to death on September 16, 2023, at his home in the 2500 block of Glenwood Place in Southgate.

“The victim was shot and killed after opening the door to his residence in the 2500 block of Glenwood Place in South Gate. The murder was witnessed by the victim’s teenage granddaughter,” the department said in a statement.

Ascencio was holding the hand of his 10-year-old granddaughter when he heard a knock on the door. According to KABC.

Immediately after the shooting, the suspect fled the scene in a dark-colored four-door vehicle.

Lawmakers and officials recently offered a $30,000 reward for information leading to the capture of Asensio’s killer, six months after no arrests were made in the shooting.

“The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and the City of Southgate have approved rewards of $20,000 and $10,000, respectively, for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those involved, for a total reward of $30,000,” the Sheriff’s Department said.

The five members of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a motion that would create a $20,000 award from the county.

“Hector’s life was brutally taken while he and his family were in their own home. His granddaughter watched Hector die,” Los Angeles Supervisor Janice Hahn said in a statement.

“We need to bring this killer to justice as quickly as possible and I’m asking for the public’s help.”

Hahn was the supervisor who originally filed the motion earlier this month.

Southgate is also offering a $10,000 reward for the suspect’s capture, according to the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department.

The motive behind the killing remains unclear and homicide detectives are seeking assistance with information about the shooting.

A detective told ABC7 they hope someone comes forward so Arsenio’s family can get the justice they seek.

The family also said their loved one didn’t have any enemies and didn’t understand why someone would kill their loved one, the outlet reported.

“If you see something or you’re with that person, speak up. It’s not right. Why did they shoot him? He just opened the door and took him away like that,” Hector Sr. Said Andy Asensio, one of Asensio’s sons.
