According to Bleeping Computer, the hacker behind this brazen cyberattack is ShiningHacker, a notorious figure who has previously experienced data breaches against platforms such as Wattpad, Tokopedia, and Microsoft’s GitHub.

When a small amount of the stolen data surfaced in 2021, AT&T denied any internal data breach, claiming it had no knowledge of the leaked information on its servers or the original vendor.

However, subsequent investigations revealed a different story. While AT&T initially refuted the claims, ShiningHacker acknowledged the breach and refuted AT&T’s position, claiming, “I don’t care if they don’t admit it. I’m just selling it,” to the beeping computer.

The hackers attempted to monetize the stolen data by selling it on the RaidForums data theft forum, with a starting price of $200,000 and offers accepted in increments of $30,000. ShiningHacker offered to sell the data immediately for $1 million, underscoring the seriousness of the data and the audacity of cybercriminals.

Telecommunications companies have been targeted by cyberattacks recently, with T-Mobile facing a breach in 2023 that affected 37 million customers, and Verizon Communications Inc. also experiencing a breach that affected 63,000 customers and employees.

In December, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) adopted a new mandate to ensure that “telecommunications, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), and Telecommunications Relay Services (TRS) providers adequately protect sensitive customer information.”

The ruling expands the definition of a “breach” to include inadvertent access, use or disclosure of customer information, unless such information was obtained in good faith by an employee or agent of the carrier or TRS provider. The information will not be used inappropriately or further disclosed.
