49ers’ Brock Purdy one or two games away from 2024 Super Bowl glory

LAS VEGAS — Brock Purdy knew exactly what was wrong and the disgusted look on his face. He and the 49ers lost to the Chiefs in the 2024 Super Bowl25-22, in overtime Sunday night at Allegiant Field, told an injury-level story.

After the 49ers Win the coin toss and get the first possession of overtimePurdy drove the offense to the Kansas City 9-yard line, facing third-and-4.

A touchdown would put them on the brink of victory.

He was rushed out of the pocket by Kansas City defenders, especially defensive end Chris Jones, and tried to get the ball. Catcher Jauan Jennings touchdownbut the ball never got there.

On fourth down, the 49ers did what they had to do, which was kick the go-ahead field goal and hope their defense could keep the Chiefs and quarterback Patrick Mahomes out of the end zone .

Of course, they couldn’t do that because Mahomes won the game. Pass to Mecole Hardman with 3 seconds left in overtime..

Purdy played well.

He’s playing well beyond his age of 24 years and 26 NFL starts.

That’s almost good enough.

Apart from Mahomes on the other side of the field.

The 49ers second-year quarterback had an MVP-caliber performance during the regular season and may be one or two points away from winning the Super Bowl MVP.

He made 23 of 38 field goals in the entire game and scored 255 yards and a touchdown.

However, he still needs a touchdown pass.

“They brought zero [coverage] I try to pass the ball to [Jennings]”, Purdy said. “That’s what hurt me. We were going for a field goal, but obviously the offense is very good and Mahomes is very good. You don’t want to give them a chance to go down the field and win the game with a touchdown.

“So when I can’t reach [Jennings], it hurts. ”

Purdy was saddened by the loss and blamed himself.

He also praised Kansas City’s defense, which was particularly stiff on first and second downs.

“Their defense was tough; the first and second games were tough,” Purdy said. “I thought it was the third and long game. [a lot]. I have to do better in the first and second rounds. I felt like they were sticky all over the court and defended a lot, which was a challenge.

“But our defense gave us a lot of stops like they did and we didn’t do anything with those opportunities, and that’s what hurt.”

A week before the game, Purdy had been talking about the importance of scoring touchdowns instead of field goals in this game because Mahomes is so dangerous.

“You have a good [offense] Like what the Chiefs did and what Mahomes can do, for us, it’s like, “Okay, we’ve got to score a touchdown.” We had a chance to do that, but we shot ourselves feet. I have to do a better job of leading the team guys and how I handle things in a crowd. ”

The 49ers were hurt by a slow offense in the second half and punted on the first three possessions.

“I’m still trying to figure it out, I’m not going to lie,” Purdy said of the struggles.

San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan was full of praise for his young quarterback after the game.

“I’m proud of Bullock’s performance all year long. I thought Bullock did a great job. He gave us a chance to win,” Shanahan said.
